Worked with the ancient lost wax technique, finished and painted entirely by hand, the Amber Pomander or pomander is one of the most sought-after and captivating pendants. It is made of yellow brass with silver soldering and boasts a hard stone set at the top to further embellish the jewel. The chain is gold-plated steel.
Amber pomander, or pomander, was a sphere of ambergris, often enriched with other essences, worn by the wealthy classes of Europe from the 13th to the 17th century for aromatherapeutic purposes. In the Renaissance period, they took on the appearance of real jewels and accessories to hang from belts or clothing. Adorned with precious stones, forged in gold or silver and decorated with filigree, Renaissance pomanders were used by kings, queens and noble figures of Western culture, such as Queen Elizabeth I of England, who is often depicted in paintings of the time with her pomander or her stepsister Mary “the Bloody,” Queen of Scotland, whose pomander jewel (among others) is on display at Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh.
These jewels are unique, entirely handmade with love in our small workshop in Montelepre (PA), Sicily.
